In the Falklands this is the 'Robin' or 'Military Starling'. Resident breeder, unique to the Falkland Islands. Unmistakable with its bright red breast (adult). Length: 24 - 27 cm ( 9.5 - 10 inches).  Walks a lot and feeds on invertebrates taking marine amphipods, earthworms, larvae and caterpillers. Breeding is between mid-August and January. Double brooding is usual.

Widespread, an abundant species across a range of habitats, including settlements, white grass and dwarf shrub heath but most likely to be seen around settlements and coastal regions.

S. l. falklandica is confined to the Falkland Islands but a similar smaller race is found in southern South Americas's Magellanic regions as far as Tierra del Fuego and southern islands of the Beagle Channel.
